CMMC Level 2: Short Answers
Is CMMC Phase 2 still happening?
On July 13, 2026, DoD paused the CMMC rollout and suspended Phase 2, pending a 60 day review by its CIO. During the review, contracts may call for CMMC Level 1 or Level 2 self-assessments, not third-party (C3PAO) certification assessments.
What still applies to my company today?
DFARS 252.204-7012 remains in effect, and NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 is still the baseline. Level 2 self-assessments, posting your score in SPRS, and the annual affirmation by a senior official all still stand.
What does CMMC Level 2 cover?
Level 2 is built on NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2: 110 security requirements across 14 control families that protect Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). A requirement is met only when every one of its assessment objectives in NIST SP 800-171A is met.
Why start with a gap assessment?
Your SPRS score and the affirmation your executive signs must match what is actually in place, and a false affirmation carries False Claims Act risk. A gap assessment shows where you stand against all 110 requirements before anyone signs.
What does this grant include?
It includes a full evaluation of all 110 NIST SP 800-171 controls, gap identification across all 14 control families, and a prioritized list of compliance gaps by severity. The written report, C3PAO readiness preparation, remediation roadmap and POA&M are not included; remediation help is available separately from Capital Cyber Compliance.
What other help is there?
Cyber Grants Alliance runs other cybersecurity grant programs, including the GSA Gap Assessment Grant, the Penetration Testing Grant and the Cybersecurity Training Grant. For programs run by states and manufacturing extension centers, see the list of state CMMC grant programs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the CMMC Level 2 Gap Assessment Grant.
What is a CMMC Level 2 Gap Assessment?
A CMMC Level 2 Gap Assessment evaluates your organization against all 110 security controls in NIST SP 800-171, which forms the foundation of CMMC Level 2. It identifies where you meet requirements and where gaps exist so you can plan your path to compliance.
How much does this cost?
This assessment is provided in-kind at no cost for qualifying small and medium-sized businesses. Additional services such as remediation planning and C3PAO preparation are available separately.
What is the difference between this and a full CMMC assessment?
This is a gap assessment, not a formal CMMC certification assessment. It evaluates your current posture and identifies gaps. A formal CMMC Level 2 assessment must be conducted by an authorized C3PAO. This grant gives you the visibility you need to prepare for that formal assessment.
Why are the detailed report and remediation roadmap not included?
The grant covers the assessment and gap identification, which is the critical first step. Detailed reporting, POA&M development, and remediation roadmaps require additional expertise and customization specific to your environment. These are available as add-on services through Capital Cyber Compliance.
How long does the assessment take?
The assessment typically takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on the size and complexity of your organization. Your team will need to be available for interviews and to provide access to documentation and systems.
Is CMMC Phase 2 still happening after the DoD pause?
On July 13, 2026, the Department of Defense paused CMMC Phase 2 pending a 60-day review. The C3PAO third-party audit requirement is on hold. DFARS 252.204-7012 remains in every defense contract, NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 is still the standard, your SPRS score still gets posted in SPRS, and an executive at your company still personally signs the compliance affirmation. A gap assessment tells you whether what that executive is about to sign is accurate.
